Where these figures come from
- Roll 2 × 5 ft = 10 sq ft and pallet 450 sq ft: the common US sizes; farms vary.
- Prices are typical US pick-up figures at the date on this sheet.
Measure the lawn area (break odd shapes into rectangles and add them as separate areas). Sod is cut in rolls of about 10 sq ft (2 × 5 ft) and sold by the pallet of 450–500 sq ft; the sheet shows rolls, pallets and cost with a 5 % cutting allowance.
Worked examples
- Front lawn 30 × 40 ft
- 126 rolls — rolls at 10 sq ft each, about $819 in materials.
- Two side strips 5 × 60 ft
- 63 rolls — rolls at 10 sq ft each, about $410 in materials.
How it is worked out
Area × (1 + waste) = sod to buy. Rolls = that ÷ square feet per roll, rounded up. Pallets = that ÷ square feet per pallet, rounded up. Cost = square feet to buy × price per square foot.
The figures behind it

Every figure here is an estimate. Materials vary with moisture, compaction and product; order a little extra and confirm quantities with your supplier.
Questions people ask
- How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?
- Usually 450 to 500 sq ft, 45 to 50 rolls, and it weighs 1,500–3,000 lb depending on moisture. Confirm with the farm before you plan the truck.
- How much extra sod should I order?
- Five percent for a rectangular lawn, up to ten for curves and many edges. Sod does not keep; order for one day of laying.
- How is sod priced?
- Per square foot, per roll or per pallet. Type whichever price you were quoted, converted to per square foot, and the total updates.
